"At noontide the light of the sun was ob- scured, and black darkness spread over the whole land. The terrifying gloom continued for a period of three hours. This remarkable phenomenon has received no satisfactory explanation from science. It could not have been due to a solar exlipse, as has been suggested in ignorance, for the time was that of full moon, indeed the Passover season was determined by the first occurance of full moon after the spring equinox. The darkness was brought about by miraculous operation of natural laws directed by divine power. It was a fitting sign of the earth's deep mourn- ing over the impending death of her creator. Of the mortal agony through which the Lord passed while upon the cross the Gospel-scribes are reverently reticent. v, compare P. of G.P. To prevent disputes over this subject that may arise over the procedure presented on page 169, we draw atten- tion to the fact that until recently, from the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith, ordinations to the Priesthood were directly to the office therein for which the recipient was chosen and appointed, in form substantially as follows: As to the Melchizedek Priesthood—V "By authority (or in the authority) of the Holy Priesthood and by the laying on of hands, I (or wee) ordain you an Elder, (or Seventy, or High Priest, or Patriarch, or Apostle, as the case may be), in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and confer upon you all the rights, powere, keys and authority pertaining to this office and calling in the Holy Melchizedek Priesthood, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen." As to the Lesser Preisthood--"By (or in) the auth- ority of the Holy Priesthood I (or we) lay my (or our) hands upon your head and ordain you a Deacon (or other office in the Lesser Priesthood) in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and confer upon you all the rights, powers and authourity pretaining to this office and calling in the Aronic Priesthood, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ Amen." In reference to the form of procedure mentioned on page 169, and that set forth in this addendum as adopted by the leading authorities of the Church from the beginning, our beloved and departed President, Joseph F. Smith, when questioned concerning them, decided, as of recore, "It is a distinction without a difference," and "either will do." Persons, therefore, who have been ordained in eithe way hold the right to officiate in all the duties of their respective offices in the Priesthood. Heber J. Grant, (Taken from the Gospel, Anthon H. Penrose, First Presidency, ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p007.jpg) A PROPHACY OF 1739 This work was printed in Basil, Switzerland in the year 1739, by Luther Grabino, in his hopes for Zion. "The old true Gospel and the gifts , they are lost. False doctrines prevail in every church and every land. All we can do is to exhort the people to be just, fear God, and shun evil, and pray, pray, pray. Prayer and purity may cause and Angel to visit a distressed soul, but I tell you that God will in 100 years hav spoken again to a little group of people led by a faithfull Prophet, and faithfull elder. They a are persecuted, burned, and murdered, but in a valley that is on the shore of a Great Lake they shall grow and make a beautifull land, have a temple of magnific— cent splendor and also possess the old Priesthood, with Apostals, Prophets, Teachers, and Deacons. From every nation will the believers be gathered by speedy messengers, then will God speak to his disobedient nations, with thunder, lightening, and distruction, such as was never heard of before.” The Book containing the above can be found in the Public Library in Basil, Switzerland. ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p008.jpg) "Happenings" We came to this earth that we might have a body, and present it pure before God in the celestial kingdom. He said he knew me as he had seen me several times with my companion. He proved to be a good listener and I explained to him the best way I could how one could tell the right Church, and how to find it. He knew the Bibel better than I did, but I told him he could learn more if he would visit our meetings. We were introduced to the dog "Hector." In the evening I went out and helped Brd. Hübner get his stock in. (Sheep & cows ect.) In the evening, at supper we were introduced to the other dog. (Ledia). It is an important item to get acquainted with the dogs, because they are the ones to ask for permission to get in the place alive. I made a good job of the acquaintince, because I made friends with them the first day. I learned a few terms in the German Farming job, and had a good conversation on "Farming" with brd. Hübner. I am just letting my mind roll back, and I am going to write about it: Dec. 30- 1923, I was in Konigsberg and was called upon to speak in the Hubber[---]g branch. I spoke on the verse in Malachi: 4:5.61. I saw two sisters that had just been baptised. My thoughts now go back to November 19- 1923, when we went out to baptise them. It was the first snowfall of the season, and we; Bro's. Hughs, Kirkham and I, with a German bd., went out to the "Taufe plats." The snow was falling fast, and large flakes, but we got them under. Just as bro. Kirkham was baptising the one, two friends came, and expressed the desire to see how it was done. They seemed to have some interest in the Gospel. One of them expressed the desire to read the "Book of Mormon," I was called upon to dismiss the baptism. On our way back, we met the other boys on their way to baptise a man from Steindamm. We went back with them and added another soul to the rolls of our Church. I was called upon again to dismiss the baptism. The Spirit of God, like a fire was burning, and the trees were covered with snow, and with the Holy ordinance that had just been administered too, it made an impression ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p021.jpg) on me that will not be for- gotten for some time, or at least I hope it won't be. I let my speach go to the baptism for the living, and used this baptism for an example. The sisters came up after the meeting, and we talked about that night. This girl had seen the Miss- ionaries each morning, (Sunday) going on the same street. Upon seeing they were Americans, they were a little curious, and on morning they followed them. They went in and visited the meet- ing, and finding it interesting, came again, and at last having a testimony of the authenticity of Gospel. That is a sign that we preach by example, as well as by words. That is the train of my thoughts, although it is nearly 1 1/2 Months ago since the baptism took place. The picture came to me when I saw the sister in the meeting, and the meeting comes to my mind today, because the sister came to me after the meet- ing and we conversed about that beautiful night. May the Lord bless her that she may always stand faithful to the promise she has made with God. D L Anderson. 1/9/24. ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p022.jpg) Selbongen - May 14 - 15 , 1924. I am just getting worked into my new field. We have plenty to do and not enough time to do it in. We helped in the field to day. We hauled "Dunk" this fornoon, and in the afternoon we planted potatoes. We had our fugand hand, and after that a girl came and asked if we would go with her and bless her little brother. We had to walk about 1 1/2 miles but we went and blessedthe little fellow. The father used to be a fighter of the Mormons but last night he acted fine. 14: This morning. 15 - an old lady came from Nikolaiken and asked to be blessed. She had heard of us in Nikolaiken, and she walked here in order to be blessed. In the days of the Apostles we read of people crossing to the place where Christ was, to receive a blessing and be healed. Then the Faith must have been great. In this day an old lady 58 years old has walked 6 3 miles to receive a blessing, because she heard that there were servants of God here who could heal her. Her faith is great, and she will be healed accordingly. We are fasting today for her and the little boy. The days of Paul may come back again but the Lord searches out the righteous. We had been wondering for a long time just where the inspiration of the Lord was, be- cause we haden't received any of it for some time. Bro. James had trouble speaking, and I coulden't find anything to say. Somehow or another the inspiration was not very mani- fest and we decided to try and find it again. We tried to be more enthused and felt a little help again. On Sat. June 21 the Bible students had a meeting here, and we went to visit them. They preach up a lot of hope, and after the meeting we conversed with them about the "spirit sleeping after the body & spirit are separated," and they brought the "Anthropomorphism" idea about Christ and we got into deep things but he retired and we went home feeling that we would liked to have carried it a little farther. We spent the rest of the evening in study and went to bed with the desire to meet there again. Miller, and D.L.Anderson arose at 3:30 AM on the morni ing of this day and took the train for Wosnitzen, at 4:30 AM, a small dorf in the Maussurn country, in Germany. There we parted, going in pairs throughout the country. Bro. Squires, and Miller went one way and bro. James and I the other. Bro. James and I went through the first dorf, it being too early to start working, and we started for the next dorf, Schimonken, kress Sensburg. We started preaching the Sospel to all those wh who would listen, and gave out trachs to all those in- terested. We had a hard time starting, and we still find it hard to speak. We hope to be better able to speak aft after a short time. We went in one farm house and bro. James spoke, having the spirit with him, and the people listened intentively. The next few places didnot go so good, but we came to a large ranch and I was spoksman. We had a good spirit and the first seigns of repentance were shown because the frau cried about the state of the World. The next place of exceitment was in the dorf , bro. James was asked about his nationality. Upon replying that we were Americans she guessed that we were Mormons and called to our attention the stories about Polygamy. She didnot want an explanation on it. We with drew our presence stating that she would be called to answer for what she said — She laughingly agreed. The next place of interest was a young lady dress maker. She listened and again we had a good spirit I was speaking and it was not so hard, so that shows what a good spirit can do. She asked if we would hold a meet— ing, but she could not help us, or she diden’t offer her place for a meeting place so we will wait until next time .This is written by the roadside at 9:00 AM. on the way to thenext dorf. We are hungry, but we arefasting today, therefor we did not accept food. We continued on to Salpia, end the second house we came to, the first real persecution took place. Bro. James gave the man a tract (Der Abfall vom Wahren Glauben” , by Penrose.) and he, being the gemeinde vor- steher, said that diden't interest him. We got down the road andhe called to us saying, we could take the tract w with us. We went back to get it, and he said be aught to drive us out of the dorf. He .had his two dogs there and it wss no convienent position. The next place worth mentioning was by an odl woman. She had a little house ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p025.jpg) '(continued) and was sad because her children would not support her. We are resting on the lake shore, on. the way to Lötzen. We are tired ard wishing we could break our fast We have washed our feet here. We had a prayer to streng- then our faith and to call for help in our future labors, and endevors. 1:00 PM. We continued our journey toward Kowzinnen. We went to the first house in the dorf and had a conversation with the man. He gave us 4 eggs, (2 hen’s eggs, and 2 ducksggs) and excused himself. Another place we were envited to a cup of milk. We then asked to have the eggs cooked and had a little something to eat. We had a good conver- sation with the man and we broke our fast in silientprayer. It certainly tasted good. We left the dorf with three dogs barking at us. We are here under a tree and it is beginning to rain. (One of the two eggs we had given to us after our meal, was broken here) 4:00 PM. We took up our journey along the road toward Lotzen. We came to a crossroad however and turned toward the other cities, or dorfs. Our minds began to fill with thoughts of where we were going to stay for the night . We began to seek lodging and found none. We then went in the forest thinking that we would have to spend the night there. We were in the attitude of making a bed and we had taken some hay from the field and were going to fix it up. We then came to the conclusion that we were showing very little faith. We knelt down and prayed for protection and vorgiv- eness and set out along the way for the next dorf. 3 kilm. distanced. After trying nearly all the houses there we were thinkirg as to whether or not the Lord was going to let us stay out after all. We were determined to go until we found something and we did. We found a family willing to take us in and we had supper there, after conversing with the man for someting, and were then shown to the bed. We certainly did justice to it too. SAT. 28, 1924. We arose at 6:00 AM. and got ready to leave. We went in to thank the people for their hos- pitality. They envited us to stay and have breakfast. We were greatful for the envitation and had some black bread and black coffee, but it tasted fine. We then took our leave from them, after thenking them for their hospitality, and continued or our journey. We went through Paprodtken, passing out tracts to some of the people, but not all because of the scarsity of ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p026.jpg) ( Our Missionary journey, continued.) tracts. We regret that we diden’t bring more than we did, but we will have to make them last and try to give them to those who are sincere in their belief. We received good receptions in nearly all the places although they, some of them, were not so anxious to accept the message. We were walking down the road and all at once there was a "Gutentag, Brd. Anderson," that came to our ears, and upon finding the source, we saw a girl, but we could not place her. She explained that she had been to the meetings in Selbongen and that she had boughten a song book from me. We then remembered that a girl wss there, but that she lived here, we had never thought, but shewas overjoyed at seeing us and we were happy to see her. She said she would come to Selbongen soon again. The next house was good and the next one they gave us some milk, which tasted fine. Wewere directed along the road to Arys, and called at a large farm house wherewe we received something to eat. A man from Berlin wasthere and we had quite a conversation with him. At present 11:30 AM. we are under two large trees by the side of a small canal, taking our first rest this morning. Bro. James is asleep and I would like to be, but I daren’t be— cause we must be on the way. I am washing my feet again and we will wash as we did not trouble the people for water this morning to wash. (The water is dirty, so will go farther, before washing.) We continued our journey and came to a lake. Here we washed and refreshed ourselves. We then had prayer asking for guidence, during the rest of the day and help/i in our labors. We haven’t enough tracts threfor we have to miss several places. We donot want to go back until after Monday and therefor we must keep tracts, so that we might get into the homes. We went through Seehöhe leav— ing just one tract there and asking that they give the tract farther after they hade read it. After having a glass of water we continued on and this finds us by the roadside again, on the road to Arys. 3:30 PM. (Bro James tore his pants here, in the seat) We continued on to Dora:- there while it was rain- ing we had some good conversations. One "Freidenker" said that Christ was just a great reformer, and that Moses was a great grafter:- both of them great, we notice. On Mt. Sina, Moses is to have used dinamite to make the Mt. smoke, and that wasen’t by the power of the Lord at all. When we first came in he said. "Have you come to convert ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p027.jpg) (continued)( me?” "No! we shall just give you our Message and you can convert yourself," came from bro. James. He also mentioned "Vielweiberei", We are now on the way to the next dorf, seeking a place to stay, as it is 6:00 PM. We continued on toward Veltshoff, and there we were given a glass of milk and a sandwitch, but no place to stay. We then continued toward Mykossen. There we tried one place and were told to go to the next place. The next place was : — A man who thought he did not need to learn anything more. We asked him if he would like to read a tract and he said he had no interest what so ever 'We spoke with him for sometime andthen mentioned the fact that we were looking for a place to spend the night. "If he had some straw or hay that we could sleep on?" "Seinetwegen,” we could stay there. He led us into the house and we had supper. We had just finished eating and the fun began. He asked us about our teachings and just how it was that a certain Frau Bragg joined this church, and what happened when one diden't keep the laws and comandments. The con- versation went farther and we learned that he could not be taught anything because of the little verse in 1John. 2:27. He cannot sin, he said, because hi is from God. 1 John 3:9 . He is a perfect man and he cannot sin. He has Christ in him, through him, and over him, and he al- ready has his eternal live. He is Christ himself and he has been born anew and he will not die again. 10:30 PM. SUN. june 29, 1924. We arose at 8:00 AM. and went to say good-by and thank the people for what they had done for us, and again we were envited to eat breakfast. We then shined our shoes and took our leave. Upon offering us water to wash, he gave us also his toothbrush, but just what he ment by it, we don't know. We diden't use it. While eating, they gave us a tract, "What Everyone should Know about the Mormons." We read it through and it sure painted us black, on Joseph Smith, The Book of Mormon, and Polygamy. Written by a Rev. Herrmann. We gave them our testimony and told them they could believe us if they liked, or Herrmann, the Rev. gentelman who wrote the tract. They had given supper, a bed, and breakfast, ard a tooth- brush, to two Mormons and they codls see whether or not we are what the Rev. Gentelman painted us. With that we left thanking them for their hospitality, and leaving the b blessings of the Lord with them. We continued on, making a tram toward Johannisburg. We stoped in the forest and had our prayer, asking for a ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p028.jpg) (Our Missionary journey continued) peaceful Sabath day. On our way we have been noticing that most all of the houses are new. Upon enquiering why, we were told that the Russians had their trenches throughout this land. The houses and land were, therefor all distroyed and had to be built up again. It is interesting to know that where the Russians used to be throwing shells, and bombs, we are now going through the same places giving the 10:30 people the Word of God, or throwing the Bible at them. AM. We continued on our journey for a ways and then we rested in the forest. I caught a flea there. We came to a farmhouse and droped a tract there. We asked for a glas of water, and got it. The next house we gave the tract to the girl, because the Mother was too long coming out. We have just given out 2 tracts this fornoon, or today, and we are certainly hungry now. We hope to get some- thing to eat soon. We are now on our way to Sdorren.2:PM. We came into Sdorren hungry and tired and the first house was the Gemeindevorsteher'sI. We gave him our Mess— age and asked him for a drink of water and we got some milk and bread which we ate with pleasure. We got some information from him and went on our way. We found out that we are a long way from Selbongen. We are now on our way to Karwick. 4:00PM. In Karwick we passed out a few tracts to a company of old people. Then we asked for a drink of water again. We received some sour milk, some bread, black, that would knock a cow down, and butter that tasted like limberger cheese, and some decamposed meat. It was hard to down, but we had to take it, because we don't know when we will eat again. He gave us a plan wherewith we could find our way to Sagon, as that is through the forest. We got in the forest and found that plan to be incomplete. I therefore went to the forester and got the way again from a map. We are now on our way through the old "Johan— nisburgerheiden", the largest forest in Germany. It is 7:00 PM. and bro. James has a lame leg and I have a blister on my foot, both of us have it on the right side. We went on through the forest and bro. James's knee kept getting sorer, and we were getting pretty tired. We got to Sagon and could not find any place to stay, so we left and went to the next dorf, Bärenwinkel. There we went through the whole dorf, finding no place until the last house where we were taken in and given some black bread and milk for supper. We feel the help and wisdom of th ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p029.jpg) ( Our Missionary journey, concluded.) of the Lord in doing this and we had a good conversation with the people here. We are very tired and so will probebly sleep pretty good tonight. 10:30 PM. Mon. June 30. We arose at 7:00 AM. and streached our limbs again. We went in to make the usual greeting with our hats in our hands and thanked them for their hos- pitality. We were again envited to have breakfast. We were given black bread and butter with smoked, ham and black coffee. We took our departure and continued on our way. We stopped in the forest to offer up our thanks to the Lord, for all that we had received up to that time, and ask for guidience during this day. We passed out tracts along our way, but nothing of exception has taken place. We are now on our way to Wiersby, and from there we will no doubt go to Selbongen. We stopped last night in Barenwinkel and from there we went to Kenzewin and then to Weissuhnenn. We are now in the forest. 12:00 AM. Noon. We arrived in Wiersba and there we had to get some- one to take us accross the lake. The man is going to A Amerika and so he had lots to ask us. There we had to spend 50 pfg. of the l Mark, that was given to us the first day of our journey. We journied through the forest and through Nikolaiken and back to Selbongen. We have made a trip without purse or script, and we have a fine spirit for the conference. We have learned to trust in the Lord, and to find joy in the hard- ships of the Gospel. We feel thankful for this opportunity and pray that we might have another one in the future. D.L.Anderson. Carvel M. James. Pleasant Grove, 669, 4th ave. S. L. C. Last night we came to speak about just which of the preachers liked to meet the "Mormons" and which of them would rather not meet us. We recalled to memory the last trip to Königsberg, & there was a Baptist paster there. We let on that we were just a couple of bucks touring the country. We said we were instructed in religion and although we didn't know much about the Bible, we had read a little in it. We asked a few questions and then asked when the Baptist Church was organized. He said, "If you ask some member, they would say at this date, but I will tell you something else. The conversation went farther and we got on to the Godhead. There he diden't want much to do, because he said he preached it so, but he himself thought it was so. He believed in Anthropomorphism, but when we got right on the subject he started to admonish us not to go too deep on that question. He finially asked if we were not "Mormons," because he said they had about the same teachings that we had ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p031.jpg) given to him. He also said that we said we didn't know the Bible very good, but he finds that we knew it pretty well. He was on his way to give a "Day of Pentecost" speach to the students at one of the resorts, I think it was Cranz. He will have to go, but he is preaching something which he dosen't believe, and that is worse than what Paul did before his conversion, because Paul at least did what he thought was right. James left this morning for Odoyen, and I was left here alone with the branch meetings. The Sun. School was pretty good, and we had the Fast Meeting by Fischer's. We finally had the opportunity and so we went out there, on Sun. afternoon on the 27th of July 1924. We walked to J[--] and from there we got boats to get accross the See (Luke). We got there and had quite a number out to the meet- ing. After the meeting we asked if there were any questions and a man wanted to try and catch us by asking some questions. He first wanted "Revelation: the Rock of" explained. Then he wanted to know how we proved that the Gospel should be preached with- out purse or script. Then he wanted to know how we had the Priesthood. He got all he could swallow for the first day, but he just wanted to catch us, and that is why we wound him up. The ride back home, or across the lake again was very fine, and I wore a blister on my hand, rowing the boat. Nevertheless, the Lord was with us and we had a very good time. We hope to go out there again, because there have applied for baptism and so we will soon have Saints there. ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F1_I1_p033.jpg) Selbongen Sept. 7, 1924. We had a climax to our labors today. Sis Kauska, on Thursday. 4th gave birth to a little baby boy. This morning it died and we had the funeral today. The sister has always had difficulty giving birth to her children and this was no exception. Bro James blessed her and the hand of the Lord was to be realized in her difficulty Being confident that it was the Will of the Lord that the little soul was called back to its maker, we proceeded in faith to arange for the funeral. After the Fast Meeting we held the funeral. Bro James presiding, he being also thefirst speaker. We then had a choir song - & I spoke. We both spoke on the Ressurrection of children. We then procceeded to the semitary where we had another song from the choir. I then dedicated the grave, and that was followed by a choir song. Bro. Mirdas then offered a prayer, and we went home. The whole Dorf was out to see the Mormon funeral They were quiet though. The Priesthood meeting was held, and then Male chorus practice. We cheered them up a little, we hope and they feel somewhat better now. The next morning we arose and Hanz woke us up; he came in like a ghost and nearly frightened us, but we lived through it. In answer to a question as to whether the Holy Gohst was received by the apostles at or before Pentecost, a statement was published by the First Presidency of the Church Feb. 5, 1916 from which statement the following excerpts are taken: "The answer to this question depends upon what is meant by receiving the Holy Ghost." If refere ence is made to the promise of Jesus to His apostles about the endowment or gift of the Holy Ghost hy the presence and ministration the of the "Personage of Spirit," called the Holy Ghost by revelation (D.&C. 130:22), then the answer is, it was not until the day of Pentecost that the promise was fulfilled. But the devine essence called the Spirit of God, or Holy Spirit, or Holy Ghost, by which God creat- ed or organized all things, and by which the prophets wrot te and spoke, was bestowed in former ages, and inspired the apostles in their ministry long before the day of Penteco— st... We read that Jesus, after his resurrection, brea- thed upon His deciples and said 'Receive ye the Holy Ghost (John 20:22) But we also read that he said 'Behold I send the promise of my Father upon you, but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on High.; (Luck 24:49) We read further: 'For the Holy Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glori- fied.' (John 7:39) Thus the promise was made, but the ful- fillment came latter, so that the Holy Ghost sent by Jesus from the Father did not come in person until the day of Pentecost, and the eleven tongues of fire were the signs of his comming."..... ----- new page (MSS6060_B1_F2_I1_p001.jpg) MISSIONARY MEETING.
